The National League (now known as the Vanarama National League due to sponsorship reasons) is an English association football league made up of three divisions: the National League, National League North, and National League South.

The National League is the top tier of the National League System of non-League football in England, and is the lowest of the five countrywide football divisions in England, just under the Premier League and the three divisions of the EFL. 

The majority of National League teams are completely professional, whereas the significant proportion of National League North and South teams are semi-professional. The difference lies in that while some professional clubs formerly played in the English Football League (EFL), the latter is non-League.

The History of England - National League

From 1979 to 1986, it was known as the "Alliance Premier League." The league was widely recognized as the "Football Conference" from 1986 to 2015.

Before 2004, The National League had only one division, but when it decided to expand as part of a major reorganization of the National League System in effect from the 2004–05 season.

The England - National League's format

A total of 24 teams compete in this competition, which is played in a double round-robin format. In other words, each club plays every other team twice during the season. 

The champions are promoted to EFL League Two automatically, while the two worst teams are relegated to the National League North and National League South, respectively. Also, clubs from the National League are eligible to compete in the English FA Cup.
